I love that my little guy is a total bookworm, but sometimes I feel that if I have to read the same book one more time, I might lose it. Last night, I think I actually had a dream about the Little Blue Truck.
That being said, I get just as excited as Ben (if not more) when he gets a new book. Eureka! New material! After the last meeting of my wine book club, I got the feeling I am not the only mother who might occasionally hide a favorite book for a couple of weeks just to “give it a break”, since we spent more time swapping names of our favorite kids’ books than we actually spent on discussing our book selection.
Here are some of the current favorites in our household right now:
Tickle Monster by Josie Bissette. LOVE this interactive book, but maybe not the best bedtime book, since there is lots of tickling that is likely to get the wee ones riled up.
Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle. This is probably the longest-standing favorite book in our house. Far better than the sequel, Little Blue Truck Leads the Way.
Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman. A Classic. (Also good for introducing colors and prepositions!)
Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell. I personally have to stifle a groan every time Ben reaches for this one from his bookshelf. (I feel the storyline just jumps around a bit too much.) I think he has a crush on Emily Elizabeth.
Snuggle Up, Sleepy Ones by Claire Freedman. This one IS perfect for right before bedtime: a soothing tone and lots of pretty pics.
Ben Loves Bear by David McPhail. Okay, so Ben hasn’t actually seen this one yet
I bought it to give to him on Thursday in lieu of Valentine’s candy. I just think it’s exciting anytime a character in a book has the same name as your child
Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. This one is actually en route to our house right now (gotta love Amazon!). I was visiting my friend in Maine a few months ago, and read this book to her daughter…such a cute story (and her daughter was captivated).
So there you have it, a few of the books currently in circulation at our house. PLEASE: Chime in with yours favs- I’m ALWAYS looking for a page-turner!!

little blue truck and its sequel have both worn out their welcome at our house! why do toddlers love hearing the same thing over and over and over?? i am a big fan of library books – if you find one you love you can buy it, if you are sick of reading it you get to return it.
“wow! city!” http://amzn.com/0786809515 has few words but tons of stuff happening in pictures. also i love the simplicity and bold colors of “freight train” http://amzn.com/0688129404 (which we have in a board book)
The Wheels On The Bus is read a million times a day at our house.
Go Dog Go and any Bear books are at the top of our lists too, as well as any books by Eric Carle or any Curious George books.
My older guy loves Miss Rumphius, The Mitten, Caps for Sale, any books by Robert Munch.
The Mitten! That was another suggestion from my book club as well…time to look into that one!
As mentioned at book club I love Todd Parr. Poppy has been getting a lot if Helen oxen bury reads and the boys are addicted to Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site. A must for toddler boys a great before bed boom and they read it back in unison.
“Little Blue Truck” is still an all time favorite in our house. He also really likes “Underpants Thunderpants” by Peter Bentley and “The Tickle Tree” by Chae Strathie. Underpants Thunderpants is a great book that I used to introduce Jack to wearing underpants and he laughs out loud when I read it to him. Tickle Tree is a great bedtime book but the swirley text and dark pages can make it difficult to read at first. I love that my son loves his books and we are always looking for new reads, so thank you for sharing your favorites.
